Wonderful piece as usual, Jayshree. What are your thoughts on "Angrezi chhod gaye?" I find this would not be a problem had Indians no culture of their own, but I doubt anyone seriously considers this to be the case. If this is true, why did the English culture germinate, remain fertilized, and grow in Bharat?
Thanks Jack. The cultural influences are not new, or recent. given the variety of sub-cultures the country already contains.
Btw, cricket, one of these influences of the English era, is the richest sport in modern India and earns nearly $2B in revenue for the industry annually. India also now hosts the global cricket premier league (a la football leagues) where players from all over the cricketing world may make upto $500k in six weeks!
I was aware of the popularity of England's most difficult game to understand or appreciate (cricket) in the land you call home. But either I'm misunderstanding your answer or you're misunderstanding me, which I get (I'm wordy). I meant that India has such a rich tapestry of cultures and influences, and I wonder why England's relatively late arrival onto the scene had such a profound effect on the country. I'm saying you're all better than that, I guess. BTW, I'm in Merry Olde now...
Hi Jack - I understood your point, and I was giving an over-simplifed answer as this is beyond a 101 level! :-) A great question and probably deserves more attention than this comment reply! The history of this region is such that not just the British rule, but many rules prior to it also created new cultural influences that continue in modern life. The influences, whether subtle or direct, short-lived or persistent, are just part of the waves carried through by the root cultural waters without fundamentally changing itself in terms of its spiritual and religious beliefs.
"...without fundamentally changing itself in terms of its spiritual and religious beliefs..." That's what I was hoping for. Thanks Jayshree, you've reassured me. But why cricket?? [sobs...]
No monsoons here on the Florida Gulf Coast. Whew! All we have are those pesky hurricanes. They say the odds are that 1 hurricane will hit our area every 75 years. Have lived here since 1986. About 5 hurricanes here in the far west Florida Panhandle so far. That makes us full up. So I no longer have any worries.
I have been writing a more generic one on culture - in terms of variations - this is a sensitive topic, and I am not sure I can do it enough justice, but I can explain the schools of thought on it.
I lived in Malyasia and Australia where tgere are whopper size monsoons. During the entire seasons my hair wouldnt dry the entire time. It was perpetually damp. Lol!
I have a my own serious of stack issues. Beginning about a month ago I found out I was unsubscribe to many of my favorite Substacks. Over 100 of them, and I keep finding more. Alarming to me, is I’ve also found that many of them reported they had to re-subscribe to me as well. So it’s really messed up my subscriber and follower base. I wrote subs Substack about my issue, and their tech wrote back there were only a few who were mysteriously Unsubscribed. I pleaded again with them to further look into the matter, and I received no response. 🤷♀️ So I’m in the process of rebuilding my Subscriber base. There seems to be glitches perhaps they can’t identify and fix.
Thank you so very much! No, I had not seen this important article and read its information. Guess what? When I clicked on it I had to resubscribe! You are one of my paid Subscribers! I’m going to check out your article, and I’m so grateful to you that you sent it! Sending you love, and lots of it! ❤️❤️❤️
Glad it helped. I am surprised you were unsubscribed too. I am working on the article to explain the frustration of being banned without cause, and you can see the myriad design issues in it. I am sorry you are losing subscribers accidentally but you now have a failsafe way to check the count against last download.
I read your article and it’s very good but when I go to settings from my dashboard the export option does not appear. Maybe there’s another Settings? I wish I could send you a photo.
I think I figured it out a little. I found more settings. Lol! I was looking at another set of settings. I’m checking it out now and trying to figure it out. Thank you so much for all your help
No monsoon here in Europe, just torrential rains every now and again, and very chilly. Thankfully, your posts are always full of warmth. 💙🙏💫
Thanks Joyce. Hope summer is not too far away!
Oh I really hope so, Jayshree 🤞

lol, one shall never know!
They incorrectly flagged you as spamish
And caused the rest of us to famish
But it's all better now
Relieved I am, and how
You're no longer bamished and clamish.

:-) thanks Dale! Good to know that the hurricane upper limit is reached!
A monsoon wondrous day to you.
Thank you!
Let's talk about McCauley-ism some time, shall we?
Interesting topic.
It’s one I’d like to know more about from an Indian perspective.

Hi Charlotte, lol, yes a hair dryer is a must then! I am not surprised to hear the Substack issues - have you not exported your subscriber base earlier ? (see https://open.substack.com/pub/techmadesimpleguide/p/substack-exporting-your-data?r=1si0oc&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web)
If you have then, just add the missing emails in manually to your subscriber email list using Dashboard/Subscribers/Add. Hope this helps! Jayshree
